Introducing Calculator Club at Freire Middle School
For 4 weeks this January, volunteer ‘coaches’ are invited to Freire Middle School to participate in Calculator Club – 30 minutes of fun and fast math games with our kids. Calculator Club is designed to support our young students in developing math fluency. As volunteer coaches, you will be matched with 4-5 students and a Freire staff member for weekly Tuesday sessions, which will culminate with all 5th grade teams coming together for the final competition!
Calculator Club begins on Tuesday, January 9, and we invite you to be a founding volunteer, to enrich our learning environment and build our students’ math skills.
Rules of the Game:
As a volunteer coach, you will scribble a math problem on a board and two students will race to solve it. The catch, one student has a calculator and the other only their brain. Students will practice and challenge each other for 3 weeks, leading to a round-robin competition on January 30 in which all 5th graders will battle for the grand prize.
Calculator Club is designed to help students become more fluent in math while also having fun! Students will try to learn math facts so well that they can beat any calculator, any where, any time, and develop approaches to problem-solving and working cooperatively.
Role of the Volunteer Coach:
Volunteer coaches will be paired with the same group of kids each week. This way, our kids can build relationships with you and benefit from having you as a mentor.
January 9, 16, 23 & 30
Session 1: 11:00 am – 11:30 am
Session 2: 11:30 am – 12:00 pm
We ask that volunteers commit to the four-week period for a half hour each week.
