Faculty/Staff Openings – HIGH SCHOOL:

Certified School Nurse

Freire Charter School is seeking a full time certified school nurse. This is a full-time, 40 hours/week, 12 month position.

The Certified School Nurse is responsible for implementing Freire Charter School’s health program as defined by the Public School Code of 1949 (section 14), PA Code 28 (Chapter 23 – School Health regulations), and the policy, procedures, and protocol of Freire Charter School.

The school nurse will split their time between our two Center City campuses, one located at 10th and Market and the other located at 20th and Chestnut.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide nursing care to both students and staff.
  • Maintain a daily log of all student and staff visits to the nurse’s office.
  • Maintain emergency information for students and staff, and record communications with parents, staff and community agencies.
  • Lead school health initiatives.
  • Serve on school’s Safety Committee.
  • Administer medication to students as requested by parents or physicians according to the medication guidelines.
  • Provide for safe storage of medications, and reliable administration and recording of all doses given.
  • Perform other school health related duties as assigned.

Certification and Qualifications:

  • Licensed professional nurse in Pennsylvania
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • PA school nurse certification
  • State and federal background checks

Competencies Required:

  • Able to make decisions independently and problem solve quickly
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to follow established policies and procedures

Associate Dean of Students

Freire Charter School is seeking an Associate Dean of Students at our high school campus. The Associate Dean of Students works closely with teachers, parents, students, the administrative team, and other school personnel to build and maintain a positive and safe school environment. This position is a 12-month, Administrative position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Foster a climate of high expectations by embodying and institutionalizing Freire Charter School’s vision for school culture and the Code of Conduct
  • Remain fair, decisive, professional, calm and supportive of whole-child development
  • Determine and issue consequences for student infractions
  • Report and track daily attendance in an organized and professional manner
  • Interview and work with students, parents, and staff to take necessary action in cases of truancy, delinquency, and/or discipline concerns
  • Manage and uphold school behavioral expectations
  • Serve as a resource to staff regarding student management issues
  • Openly and regularly communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding student behavior
  • Compile, analyze, and share student discipline data regularly, and use that data to make decisions
  • Support cafeteria moderators in maintaining well-organized and well-run lunch periods
  • Be highly visible to students and foster positive, supportive relationships with them

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or an education-related field
  • Three years experience working with urban students in an educational setting
  • Prior student discipline experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, and the ability to engage students, parents, colleagues, and community members in supporting youth development

Special Education Administrative Assistant

Freire is an innovative, successful and expanding Charter School in Center City, Philadelphia.  We are seeking an Administrative Assistant to support the Special Education department at our middle school campus.  Responsibilities are varied and include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting Special Education department by coordinating paperwork relating to IEPs, Evaluations/Reevaluations, progress reports, Child Find letters, and student files.
  • Spending two to three hours per day inside the classroom as a paraprofessional.
  • Updating special education info in district computer.
  • Organizing data in spreadsheet format for state reporting.
  • Coordinating school-wide mailings.
  • Coordinating standardized testing materials.

This 11-month position requires excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills as well as superior attention to details and accuracy.  Positive interactions with parents are a must.  The ideal candidate supports the mission of the school, is a self-starter, and is effective when working independently.

Preferred candidate qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Paraprofessional certification preferred; at least HQT required (Associate’s degree or at least 48 college credits).
  • Prior classroom experience and experience working in Special Education department.
  • Working knowledge of special ed paperwork, terminology, and laws.
  • Strong computer skills – must be comfortable working with Excel.
  • Flexibility in performing a variety of tasks as needed in support of the extended Freire community.

Database Coordinator

Build the Future Education Collaborative is a not for profit organization whose mission is to serve urban students to further their achievement, advancement, and joy in school, society and life.  We do so primarily by supporting Freire Charter Schools in Philadelphia and Wilmington.

Our team works creatively to do whatever it takes to get the job done and we are willing to do things differently to get it done well.  We believe that relationships matter and we respect diversity and individuality so that everyone feels included on the team.

Build the Future seeks to hire a Database Coordinator.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about charter schools and to gain exposure to nonprofit fundraising as well as data-driven school management.  This position will report directly to the Director of Performance Management.

Specifically, the Database Coordinator will (for each Freire school and Build the Future):

  • Support our performance management efforts to help Freire and Build the Future continuously improve what we do and answer questions from a range of stakeholders.  This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Collecting and managing school performance data for use in analyses
    • Compiling school performance data for submission to charter authorizers, funders, and governmental entities
    • Producing quarterly performance dashboards for school leaders and Boards of Directors
  • Support our fundraising efforts so that we can raise the resources and support needed to fulfill our mission. This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Maintaining our donor database
    • Drafting communication and managing mailings to donors
    • Working with a team on grant applications and fundraising events
    • Support any other projects and tasks as needed.

You are a qualified applicant if:

  • You are passionate about our mission to serve urban youth.
  • You are self-directed, detail-oriented, and able to juggle multiple priorities.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Excel.  Experience with data management systems like a CRM, student information system, or donor management system is a plus, but not required.

Business Coordinator

Freire Charter School is seeking a Business Coordinator to support our Head of Administration in making sure all human resources and financial operations tasks are taken care of efficiently and accurately.

The Business Coordinator’s day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Receiving and coding invoices
  • Following up with vendors about billing and payment
  • Depositing money at the bank and recording deposits
  • Maintaining employee files and ensuring all employee paperwork is complete
  • Processing employee benefits enrollment
  • Responding to employee inquiries about benefits with relevant documents and resources
  • Ordering books, supplies and other approved items for teachers and staff
  • Updating spreadsheets, HRIS, and our donor database
  • Assisting in processing payroll
  • Providing other administrative support as needed

The Business Coordinator will also provide administrative support in the completion of short- and long-term projects, including the following:

  • Compiling and organizing employee data for submission to the Department of Education and other outside organizations
  • Assisting in employee onboarding process by preparing new employee paperwork and serving as an HR point of contact during the hiring process
  • Assisting in the overall administration of employee benefits programs including health care and  retirement programs
  • Drafting brief memos to staff relating to business and operational matters

Careful attention to detail and accuracy are important in this position. Freire is looking for someone who is comfortable and highly successful communicating independently with teachers and staff, as well as with third-party vendors and organizations, verbally and in writing. This position involves management of a high volume of paperwork, so the ideal candidate will be highly organized as well as patient, diligent, and flexible on the job. An interest in education management and/or human resources is a plus.

A four-year college degree is required. Salary for this position is $37,000 – $40,000.

School Operations Coordinator

Build the Future Education Collaborative is a not for profit charter support organization for the Freire Charter Schools of Philadelphia, PA and Wilmington, DE.  Inside the growth and expansion of the Freire Charter School program, Build the Future seeks to serve urban students in all ways possible to further their achievement, advancement, and joy in school, society and life.  At Build the Future, we work creatively to ensure students experience success in school and beyond.    Our staff works tirelessly and does whatever it takes to support our schools every step of the way.

Build the Future Education Collaborative seeks to hire a School Operations Coordinator to support in its school operations and compliance activities.  This position will report directly to the Director of Operations and Compliance.

Specifically, the Operations Coordinator will (for each Freire school and Build the Future):

  • Work with the Heads of Schools at the various Freire campuses to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and school compliance.
  • Work with the Director of Operations on school reporting with school authorizers.
  • Manage the bidding process for the purchase of goods and services.
  • Assist in developing policies, handbooks, contracts, and other written materials.
  • Assist in new school start-up activities (e.g. purchasing, policy development, program development and implementation, training, etc.)
  • Liaise with administrative staff in the business office.
  • Assist in preparing minutes, agenda, board packets, and other items related to school governance.
  • Assist in grant writing.
  • Assist in managing school based federal programs such as Erate, National School Lunch Program, and Title I.
  • Research proposed and newly enacted legislation relating to education and school operations and synthesize for Build the Future staff and school administration.
  • Assist in ensuring our standard of excellence across multiple campuses.
  • Work with Build the Future team to perform ad-hoc reporting and administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications for the Operations Coordinator position include:

  • Two years’ experience in education, public policy, or other related field preferred.
  • A degree in public policy, management, education or other related field.
  • Superb written and oral communication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Attention to detail and expertise in project management.
  • Passion for urban youth and a no-excuses approach to how to serve them.
  • Interest in education as well as growing as a professional.
  • Commitment to collaboration and collegiality.
